Meet the Artist: Spacebound

1. Please introduce yourself?
Josh G: Josh G. One half of Spacebound.
Jon Wayne: How's it going? I'm Jon Wayne, the emcee of Spacebound. I am currently 17 years old and a Senior in High School.
2. From where?
Josh G: Yorkshire, UK.
Jon Wayne: I come from La Habra, California. It's about 40 minutes or so from LA.
3. Music influences?
Josh G: The whole Jazz and Fusion scene, Soul, Brazilian Music, Funk etc. In terms of Hip Hop I'm probably most influenced by Madlib and Dilla (RIP) but of course there's plenty more.
Jon Wayne: Non-hip hop things influence me more than anything else, really. This
has got to be a cliche by now, but Miles Davis influenced the way I think about music, mainly his fusion era. I usually listen to Electronic music when I'm writing my lyrics down, so that way I make sure I'm not in that generic state of mind when writing these things. You gotta think, how many emcees have written lyrics to some Dre beats? And it shows. I've even tried writing lyrics to Classical music, and I've come out with more beautiful and descriptive lyricism. It's all about experimentation, and without it, music would get nowhere. As for hip-hop acts, I have to say MF Doom, Busta Rhymes, Ol' Dirty Bastard, R.A. the Rugged Man...emcees like that influence me.
4. Debut appearance?
Josh G: Spacebound! Although there's a few of my beats floating around.
Jon Wayne: I haven't been on the mic for very long. I used to rap in my room in whispers with some poorly written verse in my hand and one of my buddy's beats looping on the computer, and I got such a rush from that, that I started to rap with other people when I got the opportunity at school or something, if people were standing around just having a lyric circle jerk. In October of 2007, I went and recorded a demo using a desktop microphone on a Mac, so I guess that was my debut appearance, but I'm fairly new.
5. What have you released so far?
Josh G: This is my first!
Jon Wayne: Spacebound is scheduled for release on Domination Recordings, which fits very nicely with their catalog. It's just a fun album that seeks out to do no more than satisfy the ears. Josh and I aren't preaching and we're not showing you how it's done, because, frankly, we don't know how to do shit ourselves. Other than that, I released a mixtape that's free for download on my Myspace, as well as on Domination and a few other music blogs. It's produced mainly by people I've met at the Stones Throw Message Board. A lot of great talent over there.
6. Do you produce?
Josh G: That's all I do. I tried rhyming once but I was awful so I just stuck to beats!
Jon Wayne: Haha, I make beats. I do not produce. Two totally different things. The beats are average at best. In other words, I'd rather pay for a producer's beat than use my own for free.
7. Best moment for you in hip hop?
Josh G: Getting this album released.
Jon Wayne: As a musician, I really can't say, because I'm not very experienced. If I could pick one moment, however, it'd have to be the first time I recorded in a vocal booth. This was for Styles Unbreakable, a track off of Spacebound, and before that, I hadn't recorded in a booth. Man, that was intense...gave me the chills.
8. Any plans for a tour in the near future?
Josh G: Just doing as much DJing as I can really. I feel more comfortable at home making beats though to be honest.
Jon Wayne: I will be quite honest and say I've never done a show before, but I plan on doing some shows with AVI, an affiliate of mine who's done at least a dozen tracks with me. I also plan on doing shows for the release of Spacebound around my area.
9. What's next?
Josh G: I'm working on some stuff with Arsun F!st which is looking real good, another Spacebound album and a solo with various MC's - Hit me up if you're interested!
Jon Wayne: Spacebound 2 is happening, most definitely. Josh G has handed me nearly a hundred beats within these past couple months, and we could definitely make a classic the next time around. I've got an album with Dean Lofts, a producer from Australia, and doing an EP with Rod Kashani entitled "Oops, I Sold Out!". We still don't know whether we want to make that a free download or not. As for a solo release, it'd be a bitch to get all the rights to everything I use, but that's definitely a possibility. I definitely know the right producers to make that happen, so we'll see.
10. Shout outs?
Josh G: Abby, Jon Wayne, Arsun F!st, Domination Recordings, all the guests on the Spacebound album, everyone over at the STMB and Flamefire, Big Up!
Jon Wayne: This is a lot of peeps, but hey, I'm a thankful guy. I've gotta shout out to all the people at the Stones Throw Message Board: Josh G, Jukebox, DJ Projexion, Big Ern, Doot, Wigmaster, Bill Collector, Henry Snowstorm, Neologism, DeeSupreme, Shakey Finch, hot cocoa, Drella, TKurata, breakface, JINESIS, quasquasquas, SertOne, t!llman, 00Genesis, Mozaik, ren, BazacoProject, Godzilla, Patch Lunch, Doom Addikts, miss stress, taza one, ptahh, Just Another DJ, scabs, Ralph Wiggum, Klay Doe, kcat, GOYO, DAWHUD, and all those other guys. You help me through my music, and the feedback you guys give is always good.
A special shout out from there to Spooky, for actually making me gag quite a few times. Do yourself a favor and turn yourself in. Shout out to my friends at school for supporting me all the way. There are too many to start mentioning, but you know who you guys are. Nothing but love for you all.
Also, big shout out to my family, momdadmikaelanickpatgrandmagrandpa. And to my main dog, Charlie. One final shout out to two particular individuals. Danny Lopez, who's been the biggest supporter of my passion from the very start. It was his house where I recorded my very first demo, and he still drives me to the studio every other week to record. And a shout out to AVI the most ill. Without him, I wouldn't even be doing this shit. Thank you all. And thank you for your time.
